Cycling for All

Cycling for All, cycle sessions for disabled people in Croydon and surrounding areas, has been running since 2001. To find out why it is so popular come along to one of sessions.

Who is it for?

Cycling for All is for people who can benefit from the trikes and 4 wheelers (these are examples) that we have. So if you have a mobility impairment or balance difficulties this is the place for you. It’s also good for people who lack road safety awareness such as some people with learning difficulties, and for people who can’t deal with traffic by themselves, for example some people who have a visual impairment.

If you need someone to support you, then they should come too. Parents, grandparents, siblings (disabled or not) and support workers are all welcome.

Cycling For All

We aim to run sessions every Tuesday and Saturday. Unfortunately, in the summer we are affected by school sports days, Harriers events and the re-marking of the track so our usual schedule is now as follows:

• Saturday June 26
• Monday June 28
• Saturday July 3
• Monday 12 July
• Saturday July 17
• Monday 19 July
• Saturday July 24
• Saturday August 7
• Tuesday 10 August - no session due to poor weather
• Saturday August 14
• Tuesday 17 August
• Saturday August 21
• Tuesday 24 August
• Saturday 28 August
• Tuesday 31 August.

On Mondays and Tuesdays, we run from 10:15am to 1.15pm
On Saturdays, we run from 9.45am to 12.45pm.

Aiming High for Disabled Children

We are running sessions for disabled children and young people (plus their non-disabled siblings and family members or supporters) every Tuesday in August from from 1.45 to 4.15.

Cancellations
In the event of bad weather a session may need to be cancelled. You can find out by calling the Arena duty office on 020 8654 3462 or the Wheels for Wellbeing Arena mobile on 07806 334 770. Call from 15 minutes before a session is due to start to allow time for a decision to be taken. Please do not leave messages as they will not be returned. A sign will also be displayed at the Arena. We cancel only in the worst weather, so if it is raining slightly we will probably run the session. 

New to cycling with us at Croydon?

For your first session you will need to have completed a registration form. You can download one from here (see below) or else contact Janet Paske and she can send you one. Bring the completed form along to your first session. These forms also provide useful information on what to think about when you come cycling with us, the track rules you will need to abide by and how to find out if a session has been cancelled on the day (this is only likely to happen if there is particularly bad weather). Providing an email address at registration means you can be kept up to date on planned sessions and other news.

If you are coming with a group or with a support worker then use this Easy Read form or the not Easy Read form.
If you are coming independently or with a member of your family then use this Easy Read form or this not Easy Read one. 

If you plan to be a frequent visitor you might like to apply for Arena membership. From April 2009 participants can buy a 6 monthly/ annual membership to the Arena for £8.50/ £17. You will need 2 passport photos. You can download the form here. Please note you need to liaise with Scott Hart (020 8654 3462) or one of his team in the Arena office to get your membership card.

Initial assessment

When you arrive you will be given an assessment by an instructor, who will help you decide whether to wear a helmet, and if you do, make sure it is fitted properly. They will also help identify a cycle to suit your needs and make sure you are aware of how to make it go where you want it to, how to make it move and how to stop it (this may sound silly but, to give an example, several of our cycles don’t have brakes on the handlebars).

Charges

Cycling for All
We charge £3 per session for a disabled person of any age ; this includes entrance for one supporter/ family member and a £1 Arena usage fee. Any additional people aged 10 or older accompanying a disabled person will be charged £1.

Aiming High for Disabled Children
We charge £3 per session for disabled children and young people who cycle with us; this includes entrance for one supporter/family member and a £1 Arena usage fee. Any additional people aged 10 or older accompanying a disabled child or young person will be charged £1.

What you told us

Thank you for your responses to our 2010 survey. We had 66 responses and here are the main messages. In 2010

  • 65% of you said that you can ride a cycle as a result of cycling with us,
  • 66% of you said that you felt fitter and
  • 83% of you said you had fun.

There were several comments but the main thrust was “more bikes, more sessions and no charges please”. The survey took place in March 2010.

Getting to Croydon Sports Arena by Public Transport

Croydon Sports Arena is a short distance from Arena tram stop. Frequent route 1 and route 2 trams serve the Arena from East Croydon mainline station, which in turn has frequent links to numerous locations. Both routes also stop near West Croydon station. Trams also link to many other mainline rail stations, and many bus routes.
