Bikes in the Park

STOP PRESS: Unfortunately Bikes in the Park will not run until further notice. Our cycles were burnt in a fire in Brockwell Park on Friday night and the police are still investigating. An update will be provided as soon as we have further news. In the meantime, our Croydon sessions are still running. Dated 19 Oct 2009

Come along to Bikes in the Park for disabled people in Lambeth. It’s based at Brockwell Park. We’re there on Fridays from 10am-12.45pm so come along and find out whether we have a cycle for you. We find a cycle for nearly everyone.

Who is it for?

Bikes in the Park is for people who can benefit from the trikes and 4 wheelers (these are examples) that we have. So if you have a mobility impairment or balance difficulties this is the place for you. It’s also good for people who lack road safety awareness such as some people with learning difficulties, and for people who can’t deal with traffic by themselves, for example some people who have a visual impairment. Please note that we do not have any hoists.

If you need someone to support you, then they should come too. Parents, siblings (disabled or not) and support workers are all welcome.

Session times and dates

Bikes in the Park
We aren’t running sessions at the moment as our cycles have all been burnt in an arson attack. The police are still investigating. Let us know via our Get in Touch page if you would like to be added to our mailing list so you are told once we re-start. You can still come along to our Croydon sessions though - have a look at Croydon Cycling for All for details.

Cancellations
In the event of bad weather a session may need to be cancelled. During the session you can find out by calling the Bikes in the Park mobile on 07983 691 408. Call from 15 minutes before a session is due to start to allow time for a decision to be taken. Please do not leave messages as they will not be returned. We cancel only in the worst weather, so if it is raining slightly we will probably run the session.

New to Bikes in the Park?

For your first session you will need to have completed a registration form. You can download one from here (see below) or else contact Janet Paske and she can send you one. Bring the completed form to your first session. These forms also provide information on what to think about when you come cycling with us, some ground rules that everyone needs to abide by and how to find out if a session has been cancelled on the day (this is only likely to happen if there is particularly bad weather). Providing an email address at registration means you can be kept up to date on planned sessions and other news.

If you are coming with a group or with a support worker then use this Easy Read form or the not Easy Read form.
If you are coming independently or with a member of your family then use this Easy Read form or this not Easy Read one.

Initial assessment

When you arrive you will be given an assessment by an instructor, who will help you decide whether to wear a helmet, and if you do, make sure it is fitted properly. They will also help identify a cycle to suit your needs and make sure you are aware of how to make it go where you want it to, how to make it move and how to stop it (this may sound silly but, to give an example, several of our cycles don’t have brakes on the handlebars).

Charges

There are no charges but we welcome donations as we are a charity and always need to raise money to make sure we can continue to run sessions. You can donate online at Justgiving.
